Tropical North Queensland is a vast region stretching from reefs and islands, through to beach and coastal wetlands to mountains, tablelands and Gulf Savannah grassland. The major centre is Cairns, a tropical town with irresistible markets and shopping arcades.
Cairns City - Cairns is an ideal base for exploring and enjoying the rich, varied pleasures of this region. There is a variety of Cairns city accommodation, including apartments, hotels and resorts. The Cairns International Airport, a short ride from the Cairns city centre, acts as a gateway to the Cairns region and a primary access point to the Great Barrier Reef.
The Cairns Esplanade is a major focal point of the city, and invites you to stroll, fly a kite, relax on the grass under a shady tree, or share a barbecue or picnic with friends. The large sandy swimming lagoon is open for free public use between 6am and 10pm daily.
While Cairns does not have a swimming beach, there are beaches north of the city and each day, over 600 sea, air and land tours depart from Cairns.
Much of the holiday accommodation in Cairns is close to shops, restaurants, theatres, galleries, nightclubs, the glass-domed Casino and the Cairns Convention Centre. Cairns city shops and duty free stores are well stocked with souvenirs and luxury goods from top Australian and overseas designers. Two large leisure retail centres, one at the Pier and another at Cairns Central, have a great deal to offer visiting shoppers.
North of Cairns are the beaches such as Palm Cove, Trinity Beach and Kewarra Beach where palm trees hang lazily over the sandy beaches. Further north is the resort town of Port Douglas and continuing on you find the spectacular Mossman Gorge, World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation. North of Cape Tribulation is Cooktown – and traversing further north along the rugged coastline with it’s sparsely populated wilderness is the most northern tip of Australia - Cape York.

West of Cairns is the beautiful Atherton Tablelands and travelling further west you come to the Gulf Savannah with its rich history of gold rushes, bushrangers and wandering Aboriginal tribes.
South of Cairns is the Cassowary Coast including Mission Beach and then Townsville, and to the east off Cairns are the magnificent Green, Lizard and Fitzroy Islands.
Visitors can choose to stay in a converted railway carriage at the Undara Lava Tubes, or take a three to seven night cruise around the reef on board a luxury vessel. Tropical North Queensland also offers its visitors a great choice of island accommodation.
So come on in and browse through our extensive listing of Cairns holiday accommodation and tour options for your stay in this delightful region.
